This document discusses refill friction stir spot welding(de,ru,fr) (RFSSW), a variant of friction stir spot welding that addresses limitations of conventional FSSW. RFSSW uses a non-consumable tool with independently moving probe and shoulder components to produce spot welds without exit holes. It has two variants - shoulder-plunge and probe-plunge - and involves plunging, stirring, and extracting material. RFSSW welds exhibit stirred, thermo-mechanically affected, and heat affected zones. Potential applications include shipbuilding, aerospace, railway, and automotive structures. Advantages over other spot welding include remaining solid-state, lower temperatures, and ability to join difficult materials like aluminium alloys.
